Does a clinic need a website, or is Instagram enough? Five jobs that decide it

Most of what ranks for this question is written by people who sell websites or by agencies posting on Instagram. We read the home pages of 18 clinic sites that rank in Riyadh and Jeddah, three official help pages and four Google searches, and split the question into five jobs.

A clinic needs both, because they do different jobs. Instagram helps people see your work and message you. A website and a Google Business Profile are where a patient who searches for a dentist checks you, finds your branch and books. A clinic that lives on Instagram alone is hard to find for the patients who start with a search.

This guide is for clinic owners and medical directors in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf who run on Instagram and wonder whether a website is worth it. On 3 November 2026 we ran 42 autocomplete searches, read four Google results pages from a Riyadh location, opened the home pages of the 18 clinic sites from our phone test of 2 November to see how they treat Instagram, and read three official help pages. We sell SEO for clinics, so a website is what we sell. We say below where Instagram is the right place to start, and the limits are at the end.

The short answer: five jobs

The question “website or Instagram” hides five separate jobs. Score your clinic on each one and the answer is usually obvious.

Job Instagram Website and Google profile
1. Be seen by people who were not looking Strong: feed, reels, ads, shares Weak: needs someone to search first
2. Be found by a patient who searches Possible but not in your hands (see below) Strong: a page per treatment, branch and doctor, plus the map listing
3. Let the patient check you A profile and posts Doctors, branches, hours, map, reviews in one place
4. Take the booking Messages and a link in the bio Call button, form or slot picker on the first phone screen
5. Count and keep what you build The platform’s own numbers and rules Your own analytics and pages

Instagram wins job 1 clearly. The website and the Google profile win jobs 2, 3 and 5. Job 4 can work on either, but a message thread cannot be counted the way a form can, and it depends on someone answering fast. If most of your patients arrive by scroll and referral, start with Instagram and add a Google profile and a one-page site. If a large share arrive by search, the site is the main asset.

What clinic owners search, and what they find

We ran 42 autocomplete searches with the Saudi setting (20 English, 22 Arabic, from a machine in Egypt, capped at ten). Eleven English and four Arabic phrasings returned anything. No phrasing of the owner’s question returned a suggestion in either language, for example “does a clinic need a website”, “do dentists need a website” or «هل يكفي انستقرام للعيادة». What did return were buying and tool phrasings: “dental clinic website” and “dental clinic website design” returned ten suggestions each, “dental clinic instagram” returned ten (post ideas, bio, feed), «تصميم موقع طبي» returned three and «تسويق العيادات» two. Demand for the owner’s own question is not visible in autocomplete, so we wrote this for the owner who is about to decide.

Page 1 from Riyadh for four searches looks like this (titles and addresses only):

Search What page 1 shows
«هل تحتاج العيادة موقع الكتروني» Six pages that sell clinic websites or site building, a health portal, a LinkedIn page and one Instagram post
«هل يكفي انستقرام للعيادة» Six Instagram results (five posts whose visible text is about marketing a clinic, one clinic profile), one Facebook page, two clinic web pages
“does a dental clinic need a website” Nine blogs from dental marketing and web vendors, none from the Gulf
“instagram or website for a dental clinic” Six Instagram results and three vendor blogs (the word Instagram is in the query)

Every answer comes from someone who sells websites or social media, and we found no page that compares the two for a Gulf clinic with evidence. We are one of those sellers, which is why we show our method.

What 18 clinic sites do with Instagram

On 2 November 2026 we loaded the home pages of 18 dental clinic sites that appear on page 1 in Riyadh and Jeddah for five searches, in Chrome set to a phone screen. A second pass the next day read the same pages for their links to social profiles and maps.

On the home page Sites (of 18)
Link to an Instagram profile in the page 17
The link is on the first phone screen 1
The link sits in the footer 15
Instagram reels shown on the page 1
Link to a Google Maps location 12
Link to X, Facebook, Snapchat or TikTok 12, 11, 9 and 9

Seventeen of 18 link to Instagram, but only one puts it where a visitor sees it first, and only one shows reels on the page. Three more carry code for a feed or social widget that rendered nothing in our test. The median site links to four social platforms, and one links to none. These are clinics that already rank on Google, so the sample cannot tell you how an Instagram-only clinic does. It does show how clinics with both treat the two: the website holds the booking path and the map, and Instagram is a link at the bottom.

Instagram still matters in Saudi Arabia. Our Saudi social media statistics guide lists CST’s 2025 survey (Instagram fifth, at 40.8%, and 51.2% of people aged 20 to 29) and DataReportal’s 18.2 million Instagram users. The finding is that a channel with that reach should not carry the whole load.

What Instagram and Google say about each other

We opened three official help pages on 3 November 2026.

Instagram on search engines. The Help Center article “Why search engines might index public Instagram photos and videos” says Instagram generally asks search engines such as Google and Bing not to index photos and videos from stories, reels, posts and highlights. It allows indexing of public reels and posts from 1 January 2020 onward for accounts where the holder is over 18 and the account is public and professional. Meta says it does not control search engines and cannot guarantee if or when content is removed. So a post may appear in Google, but you cannot choose its title, add business markup or build a page for one treatment in one district.

Google on social links. The Business Profile Help pages “Manage social media links on your Business Profile” and “Manage your social media links” say you can add one link per platform, Instagram is one of seven platforms, and the links are currently available in select regions. They also say Google provides no performance metrics or click tracking for the links. We did not test whether the field is available for Saudi profiles, so check yours. The practical point is that a visit from your Google profile to your Instagram account is invisible to you, while a visit to a booking page is not.

Which clinics can start with Instagram

Three situations are honest cases for starting on Instagram:

  1. A new single-doctor practice whose first patients come by referral and direct message. Open a Business Profile on day one and add a one-page site before you spend on ads.
  2. A clinic whose patients mostly arrive from friends and posts. Check that with the question to new patients in check 5 below, then add the profile and the page.
  3. A clinic with no budget for a full site. A one-page site that carries the booking form is enough to start. It does not need ten pages.

Instagram alone becomes a trap when patients are searching and you are not there: when a patient types a treatment and a district, when someone checks your name before booking, or when you want a count of bookings by source.

Six checks, one afternoon

  1. Search your clinic’s name in Arabic and English on a phone. The profile, the website and your Instagram account should all be there. Warning sign: only a directory listing or only a post.
  2. Search a treatment plus your district, as a patient would. Note which pages from your clinic appear. Warning sign: you appear only as a post.
  3. Tap from your Instagram bio to a booking. Count the taps. Good answer: the bio opens a page with a booking form or a call button. Warning sign: the bio opens a home page where the patient must hunt for the button.
  4. Open your Business Profile. The website field should point to your booking page, and the Instagram link should be added where the field is available.
  5. Ask every new patient how they found you, for four weeks. Write the answer down: Instagram, Google search, map, friend, doctor referral. This tells you which job matters most for your clinic.
  6. Put the Instagram link where a visitor sees it. Only 1 of our 18 did. Show a few reels on the home page if you post them, as one site did.

If the first two checks fail, our guides to local SEO for clinics and a clinic missing on Google Maps come next. If visits arrive and bookings do not, read why a clinic website is not getting bookings. For a paid channel next to organic search, see SEO or Google Ads for a dental clinic.

Before you publish: health advertising rules

Treatment pages, offers, before and after photos and testimonials can count as health advertising in Saudi Arabia, whether they sit on Instagram or on a website. Check the current Ministry of Health requirements before you publish any of them, and have a dentist approve the medical accuracy of every treatment page. This guide contains no treatment advice: it is about how a patient finds and books a clinic.

How we checked, and the limits

On 3 November 2026 we ran 42 Google autocomplete searches with the Saudi setting (20 English, 22 Arabic, from a machine in Egypt, capped at ten) and read four Google results pages with personalisation off from a Riyadh location, noting titles and addresses and reporting no positions. We planned to read six more results pages for patient searches such as a treatment plus a city, to count how many results are Instagram pages, but after the fourth load Google returned no result list for the next six, and the last one showed an error 403 page. We did not try to work around it, so we have no count and make no claim about how often patients see Instagram results. One English search showed a People Also Ask box that we did not record, so the questions above come from the checks. The 18 clinic sites ranked on page 1 in our searches on 2 November, so they are not a random sample and they are clinics that already have a website. We loaded each home page in Chrome set to a 412 by 915 phone screen with Arabic as the language, scrolled to the bottom and counted links by their address. A link we could not see counts as a link in the page. Three sites carry feed or widget code that rendered nothing, so we count them as not showing a feed. Some of the 18 are multi-specialty centers or hospitals that offer dental care, and we did not separate them. We name no clinic. Our visitor had an Egyptian IP address. We measured no patients, bookings, revenue or ad results, and no figure here says that a website will raise bookings. These are readings of one day.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does a clinic need a website if it already has Instagram?

Yes, if it wants patients who start with a search. Instagram is strong at being seen and at starting a conversation. A website and a Google Business Profile are where a patient checks the doctors, finds the branch and books. Keep Instagram, and add the other two so a search for your treatment or your name ends at a page you control.

Can Instagram posts show up on Google?

Sometimes. Instagram's Help Center says it generally asks search engines not to index photos and videos, but allows indexing of public reels and posts from 1 January 2020 onward when the account holder is over 18 and the account is public and professional. You cannot set a page title or markup on a post, and Instagram says it cannot guarantee if or when a search engine removes content.

Is a Google Business Profile enough without a website?

It answers who, where and when well: name, address, hours, reviews and links. It does not give each treatment or each doctor a page, so it serves the search for your clinic's name better than the search for a treatment. Many clinics need both, and the profile should link to the booking page.

How should a clinic connect Instagram and its website?

Put the booking page in the Instagram bio, put the Instagram profile link on the website where a visitor can see it, and where Google offers it add the profile to your Business Profile. In our reading of 18 clinic sites, 17 link to Instagram but only 1 shows the link on the first phone screen and only 1 shows reels on its home page.

What is the smallest website a clinic can start with?

One page that names the clinic, the city and district, the main treatments in words a dentist has approved, the doctors, the branch with a map, opening hours, a call button and a short booking form. It should load on a phone and carry the Instagram link. Add a page per treatment only when a dentist can approve the text.

Should a clinic run Instagram ads or invest in search first?

It depends on whether your patients start with a search or with a scroll, which you can find out by asking every new patient how they found you for a month. Our guide to SEO or Google Ads for a dental clinic sets out the trade-offs for the search side.
